The Perfect Season

As I watched last night’s All-Star game with my friends, a thought crossed my mind. With the Mets winning 9 in a row, the same thought crossed my mind. As much as I hate the Yankees, I’m rooting for them to go to the World Series as well as the Mets. Yesterday, Newsday writer Shaun Powell wrote an excellent article about the perfect All-Star game. So I thought I should write one about the perfect season. The Mets start out slow with a resurgence at the all-star game but fall back to 3rd due to a slump after the break. But they make a near historic to historic comeback that, if anything, matches their horrendous collapse of yesteryear with a perfect game, or a no-hitter at the least, to cap off the comeback giving Shea its first perfecto or no-no, with people climbing the outfield fences and running through the front gates to at least catch a simple glance at the majestic moment. The Yankees stay neck and neck with the Red Sox for the rest of the season with some unbelievable Red Sox-Yankees series. They end up in a dead tie for first and must play a one game playoff to determine the winner. The game is played at Yankee Stadium in front of a sell-out October crowd. Kids, and parents alike, play hooky to crowd around the stadium, flood the streets, and hold radios on the streets if they can’t afford tickets. The game goes to extra innings with a dramatic comeback by the Yankees capped off with a game-tying homerun by Derek Jeter in the bottom of the 9th and walk-off single in extra innings giving the Yankees the division. In the NLDS, the Mets shatter the Cubs dreams of winning their first World Series in 100 years when another black cat runs onto the field in front of the Cubs dug out. In the NLCS, the Mets take on the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers take a 2-0 series lead, the Mets win 3 in a row to take a 3-2 lead. The Dodgers are able to win Game 6 to tie the series at 3. But in Game 7, the Dodgers blow a 3-run lead in the 9th with a walk-off homerun by David Wright and Mets’ fans chant “LA Bums, LA Bums!” In the ALDS, the Yankees take on the Chicago White Sox and sweep them. In the ALCS, the Yankees take on none other than the Boston Red Sox. They win the first three games but fail to close out the series in the next two games. With a chance to crush the Yanks again, Derek Jeter saves the Yankees again with a two-run homer in the 7th and Mariano Rivera shuts the door down in the 8th and 9th to pair the Yankees and Mets together. The Yankees get home-field advantage and win the first two games. The Mets match them and take two in Shea but lose Game 5 to trail 3-2. However, they come out flying in Game 6 and take home the win to tie the series. Game 7 is a pitching matchup between Andy Pettitte and Pedro Martinez. A pitchers’ duel from the start until Jeter drives in a run in the 5th with a base-hit. With the bases loaded and one out with Yankee fans chanting “Who’s Your Daddy!?” A-Rod grounds out into a double-play. The Mets take a 2-1 lead in the 7th on a two-RBI double by Wright. Jeter comes up big again giving Wagner a blown save as he drives in the tying run in the 9th. The game goes into 16 innings. The ending I’ll leave up to you and real life. “It seemed like the Stadium didn’t want it to end. That’s what we were talking about. It just wanted baseball to continue. I thought it was fitting.” Jeter will tell reporters after the game. “It was honor to play this game. I knew and everyone else knew that no matter what the outcome, we would still feel like champions. This is and always will be the greatest game I’ve ever and will ever play in my whole life.” Wright will tell reporters after the game.
