NFL at the Quarter Pole
Buffalo Bills
NOBODY CIRCLES THE WAGONS LIKE THE BUFFALO BILLS!! Ok, now that I got that out of my system we can continue. The Bills are possibly the biggest surprise of the season at 4-0 but, are they for real. I’ll look at the positives before the negatives. The biggest difference for them this year has been quarterback play. Trent Edwards has been playing as well as any Bills fan could hope for. He has shown great poise and pocket presence, especially during 2 come from behind wins(Jaguars, Raiders). The offense is 12th in the league in passing yards per game and 8th in rating, however rushing is down at 20th. Lee Evans brings the offense a legitimate deep threat averaging 23 yards a catch. Marshawn Lynch is a dual threat out of the backfield and just like last year will be a force to be reckoned with all year. The defense has looked great, especially the front seven. The addition of Marcus Stroud and Kawika Mitchell have helped this unit tremendously. The Bills are ranked 7th in total defense and 6th in scoring. The special teams have also been on point. They have the ability to change a game at any point with Roscoe Parrish and Leodis McKelvin.
Now onto the bad news. In all honesty the Bills really haven’t played anybody yet. Their opponents combined record is 4-11. They played a Seahawks team in week 1 without any receivers. They came from behind in the 4th quarter at Jacksonville. That’s nice and all but Jacksonville hasn’t really looked like themselves lately. They’re missing offensive lineman due to injury, so they can not run the ball like they want to and if they can’t control the clock and are forced to pass they are an average team at best. Then in week 3 at home against Oakland they were in the process of being dominated when the Raiders remembered they were the Raiders and blew it. In week 4 they were losing to RAMS going into the 4th quarter but, the Rams are the Rams. Earlier I mentioned the defense was ranked 6th in the league. At this point I would be inclined to say that is due to lack of offense from the opponents. The best offense they Bills have faced is Seattle (11th in total yards, 23rd in passing). They haven’t faced a passing offense in the top 20 yet.. That will change in the near future with a trip to Arizona in week 5 and the Chargers in week 7.
Despite the fact that I seemed to have harped on the negative a little bit I see the Bills finishing 10-6, which will put them in position for a division title and if not that then a wildcard berth. This is mainly due to the fact they play a weak schedule: Miami (twice), KC , SF, and Cleveland. Making the playoffs would be a tremendous accomplishment for this team and it could be a stepping stone for them to compete for this division even after the return of Tom Brady next year.
