Coming soon here on Youcastr…one of my new show’s, Fightnight Saturday Night will be debuting. So before then, I’m going to recap what’s been going on in the fight game, both MMA and boxing.
Lets recap what happen on Saturday night…as HBO produced two monster fights that has implications on two weight classes, the 130 and the 135 pound weight class respectfully. The first fighter that I want to highlight just happens to be a former olympian, and with this being an olympic year, its only fitting. Rocky Juarez needed this victory, without a shadow of a doubt. By beating Jorge Barios by 11th round TKO. Now true, this should’ve been an easy task for Juarez, considering he had the skills to be a world champ when he came out of the Sydney games, but the cat has been lacking those skills for quite awhile. True, he showed up the first time against the legendary Marco Antonio Barrera, but where has he been since. With sub-par performances in the rematch against Barrera, Juan Manual Marquez, and Humberto Soto Rocky needed to come out and showed that he not only had the skills, but the determination to be a world champion. He looked sloppy, really sloppy the first 10 rounds of the fight, but then came out looking like the olympian that he is in putting away Barios. Now, I used to be big on Rocky when he came out in 2000, I’m still am. But he needs to put on this type of performance for 12 rounds against a man who is considered the best in that weight class today and a man who beat him before in Soto. If he puts on that type of a performance against Soto, I guarantee that the Rock will be wearing gold really soon.
Now, lets get on to the hottest and best weight class in the game today. I’m talking about the 135’s. By far the class with the best matchups and talent in the world. This past weekend, one of the best came out and put on his best performance since probably his fight against Acelino Freitas. Juan Diaz came out bullied Michael Katsidis for 12-Rounds, putting himself back on top where he belongs. Now anyone that knows the game knows that Juan was beaten pretty bad back in March by one Nate Campbell, but every dog has its day, and I can see the Baby Bull back in there against The Galaxy Warrior in his next fight, assuming Nate gets past Saturday night. Speaking of Saturday night, its going to be a ridiculous night of Lightweight fights that night with the two recognized champs in the division, a pound-for-pounder, and an up and coming fighter all fighting on the same night. On HBO-PPV, Joel Casamayor climbs into the ring to defend his Ring Magazine title against former Featherweight world champion Juan Manuel Marquez. Also on that card, and dont get it twisted, this IS NOT the rematch of the year, the shame on HBO for even giving this that type of hype, but Sergio Mora defends his WBC 154 strap against goes former champion Vernon Forrest. For anyone who saw the first fight back in May, do not get it twisted, this is a horrible undercard fight that shouldnt even be televised on FSN for that matter. Then Showtime gives us the adforementioned Campbell putting all three of his straps on the line (WBA, WBO and IBF) against power punching Joan Guzman. If you havent seen Guzman fight before, stand by!!! And then in a war for the Jr.Welterweight title, Champion Timothy Bradly fights Edner Cherry in what’s going to be a war on its on. Oh by the way, Sugar Shane and Mayorga in two-weeks…cannot wait, Dawson-Tarver and Peter-Klitchko on Oct. 11, Pavlik-Hopkins Oct. 18, Calzaghe-Jones for the Light Heavy strap in the Garden on Nov.8, and the Pound-For-Pound King vs the Golden Boy on Dec. 6.
Now on to MMA, and I didnt get a chance to catch it, but that boy Rashad Evans is a beast!!! That’s all I got to say about that. The Iceman and his career, could be finally melting. Did anyone catch that Randy Couture and Brock is going to get it on in what will be the biggest PPV in UFC history, on top of that, we get Rampage against Silva on the same night!!! That’s just crazy. Yeah, and you heard right, Ken Shamrock is really fighting again, but he may actually have a chance against Youtube’s finest. I guess we’ll see. And finally, some sad news as former UFC middleweight champion Evan Tanner past away on Monday, Sept. 8 while on a camping trip near San Diego. The UFC was extremely classy with their tribute to Tanner. RIP Evan, you will be missed.
Once again, this weekend will be a monster weekend for the fight fans, and I’ll be back next week for a recap on the weekend fights. Holla.
