In 1905 the biggest sporting news was Bob Fitzsimmions relinquished his light heavyweight title when he was stopped by Jack O’Brien, one of the fastest fighters of the day, won in the 13th round in San Francisco. Another big story happenend in golf. Willie Anderson won the US Open for a record 3rd time. His total of four victories(1901,1903,104,& 1905) was only equalled twenty-five years later by Bobby Jones, then Ben Hogan and finally the “Golden Bear” Jack Nicklaus.

In 1906, one of the major sports stories was when Liverpool won the League Championship for the second time, having won the Second Division Championship the year before. They were the first club to win the titles in consecutive years. Also, in 1906, in the world of tennis when W.J. Clothier recovered from the depths of 0-40, & 2-5 down in the fifth set to beat FB Alexander 8-6,6-2,4-6,1-6,7-5 in the Men’s Quarter-finals of the US Championsip. Clothier went on to win the title.

Not since the popular song “Bill Bailey” wriiten by Hughie Cannon has the city of Chicago enjoyed two baseball teams at the same time to be in the playoffs. Well we are in the year 2008, and for those of you who are math majors, that is 102 years of non Chicago teams.(White Sox and Cubs). Chicago is just happy to get one team, but two WOW!!!

The Sox made it to the dance by winning three straight games. The Sox are the first team in Major League History to achieve such a complement. The played there 163 game against Detroit(a make-up game from mid Sept). One loss and the season is over. They won that game, with starting pitching. Well actually it started by winning the game against Cleveland to avoid the sweep. Then the one day playoff game last night against Minnesota. Obviously, you know the outcome. Not only did they do it with starting pitching, but with defense from an old hero. Who you may ask who is the old hero? Does the name Ken Griffey Jr. ring a bell. He threw out two Minnesota players trying to scoring in the fifth inning.

Back to the pitching in Jon Danks. The Twins do not like to face Danks at all, especially their hitters. Minnesota batters are a combined 22-40 against Danks. Tues stats did not help. They went a combined 1-9 with three strikouts. Not to make matters worse, but there 1-4 hitters went 0-12 against Sox pitching. In Danks career, he has won 12 games against the Twinkies. The power hitters were 4-12. Danks pitched 8 innings of two hit ball giving up 3 walks and striking out 4. Not only that, Danks was winless against the Twins at US Cellular Field, with a whopping 7.91 ERA. What happenend? The Sox starters need to talk with the young rookies to get ready for the hot DevilRays young hitters. They need to take a page out of Floyd and Danks books.

However, praises have to be given to the Twinkies pitching. There were times when the Sox had runners in scoring position and could not score. Blackburn got hitters to hit ground balls to get out of alot of jams. The only run the Sox scored was a home run by Jim Thome. That was the final score 1-0.

Now the Sox have the day off to savior the victory before facing the Tampa Bay DevilRays. The only thing, well one good thing, is that the Sox have a three game winning streak. The first in Sept. We are in Oct now and that does still count!!! The other good thing going for the Sox is that they have veteran ball players. Players like Paul Konkerko, Jim Thome, A.J. Mark Buerhle etc. But it has been the rookies that have been taken over. Unsung heros like Alexi Rameriez, without is grandslam against Detroit the Sox probably would of lost. So they do have something going for them entering Game 1 of the ALCS. MOMENTUM!!!

The Cubs on the other hand, have not played since Sunday. The starters have not seen an opposing pitcher since last Monday. The Cubs have won 5 out of the 8 games they played against the Dodgers. That was before a guy named Manny Rameriexz and Casey Blake came to the west side. This Dodgers team have been playing great fundamental baseball, starting with hitting. The Cubs have the best NL Record, have home field advantage throughout the playoffs(Not the World Series if they make it). The Cubs had the second or third best home record in baseball. The pitching staff has been better than avg. Having three double digit winners on the starting squad. Ryan Demepster, Carlos Zambrano, and Ted Lily. Those pitchers are definitely going to pitch against the Dodgers. That all they really neeed. Well, it depends on how well or even how long the pitch in their respective starts. At least this is a five game series. Cubs will definietly take one out home, possibly two. However, winning on the road has been a struggle but not lately. So if they win both games at home, they only have to win one on the road.

Saying that the Cubs and White Sox will meet in the World Series is like saying Pigs can and will fly!! It will not happen. Either the Cubs or Sox will go to the World Series. But if it does happen, look out Chicago World War 3 may start.
