After a long summer filled with nothing going on in the
sports world, fans around the country are ecstatic about the
upcoming football season. Last year was a year for the ages in
both the NFL and NCAA. Eli Manning, Michael Strahan and the
Giants shocked the world by beating Tom “Golden Boy” Brady and
the previously undefeated Patriots in the Super Bowl. Not to
be outdone the NCAA had a season for the ages also. The year
started off with Appalachian State knocking off Michigan in
Ann Arbor, while it ended with upsets like that same Michigan
team beating Florida and West Virginia pummeling Oklahoma in
the Fiesta Bowl. Teams like Kansas and Hawaii were BCS Party
Crashers as they both stole a spot in major bowl games. But,
as this season is already underway, fans are anxious to know
who this years championship teams really are; let the games
begin.
Traditional powers of the NFL have taken some hits in the past
two weeks. The Chargers star studded defense took a big blow
when Shawne Merriman’s valiant effort to return to the field
after a knee injury was cut short in the season opener versus
the Panthers. Also, in week 2 future Hall of Famer LaDanian
Tomlinson left with a toe injury in San Diego’s thrilling loss
to Denver. Of course, everyone knows about Tom Brady’s injury.
The three time Super Bowl champion tore both his ACL and MCL
in what was supposed to be a walkthrough with the Chiefs. New
Orleans Wide Receiver Marques Colston was injured in the
opening week also as he is now out 4-6 weeks for the upstart
Saints. But not every team had a rough opening to the season;
The New York football Giants were dominating on both sides of
the ball against a sluggish Washington Redskins team.
Meanwhile, the cross-town Jets paid a visit to struggling
Miami with their new Quarterback Brett Favre, Whats that?
You’ve never heard of him? I think he used to play in Green
Bay or something… Anyways, this Favre character and the Jets
beat a terrible looking Tony Sparano coached Dolphins Team,
for the Jets first win in what promises to be a new era.
Overall, the NFL has had a great, but injury plagued start to
the 2008-2009 season.
College football, as always, hasn’t disappointed its fans when
it comes to thrilling games and exciting players. USC flexed
its muscles against a lackluster Ohio St. team in what came to
be known as the “Collision in the Coliseum.” The SEC showed
how tough a defensive conference it really is with score such
as, 14-7 and 3-2. Recent polls have the Trojans, Georgia,
Oklahoma, and Florida shuffling in the top 4 spots from week
to week. As the season progresses the conferences are starting
to take form and some aren’t doing as hot as others. Here’s
how I see the conferences rankings after the first three weeks;
SEC- Any questions? 5 out of the top 10 teams in the country reside in this loaded conference
Big 12- Oklahoma, Texas, and Mizzou are National Title Contenders
Pac 10- USC, Arizona St., and Oregon make up for UCLA
Big 10- Ohio St. is the only legitimate contender
Big East- West Virginia and South Florida keeping it respectable
ACC- Downright terrible, NO BCS CONTENDERS, Clemson vs. Alabama, and UVA vs. USC say it all
These rankings are tentative and can change throughout the year (excluding the ACC of course.)
The greatest time of the year has begun for sports
fans. And as the football season progresses only one thing is
guaranteed; nothing is guaranteed, just ask Lloyd Carr (former
Michigan head coach.) The teams are lined up and ready to
play, and as fans we too are lined up, and ready to watch. And
for now, that’s the Buzz in the sports world.
