College Football Season Preview

It’s that time of year again. I (and many others) have been waiting 9 long and vigorous months to see my (and many others) favorite sport: college football. I’d like to give a little preview, starting with my hometown team of Michigan, then looking at some major conferences before predicting the eventual BSC Champion in my eyes. Let’s get started shall we?

Things in Ann Arbor are looking shaky, and have been ever since the departure of long time coach Lloyd Carr. After the whole Les Miles debacle and after we finally decided on WVU coach Rich Rodriguez, we still had oh so many holes to fill. Though we didn’t get top rated QB Terrelle Pryor, we did manage a top rated and internet celebrity Sam McGuffie out of Texas, who we will hopefully see a lot of this year. The QB position is still not set, but with Rich Rod’s planned spread offense, I believe we can adapt to the up and coming 2-QB system using the 2 QBs we have to offer: Steven Threet and Nick Sheridan. Expect to see each of them share the work load, and expect to se a much different Michigan team then the classic one who ran the ball twice to the left, threw on third down, and occasionally scored. No, that U of M team is gone. It’s a new era up here, and it’s exactly what this university needed. Though many people prefer the tradition of this school, it’s about time we stepped into this dimension. I think this is best for everyone, and even though it may take a few years for Rich Rod to adapt his system and get the players he needs to be successful, I believe this university could be National Title bound in the up and coming years. But as for this year, I’d be happy with an 8-4 year and a bowl game.

Now, let’s look at some major conferences. Starting in the Big Ten, where I see Ohio State coming out practically unscathed. Up and coming teams like Illinois, Wisconsin, and Penn State could pose a challenge in the near future, but nobody is gonna stop them from reaching and losing another National Championship game (sorry Buckeyes, I just flat out hate you guys). Moving to the ACC, where many people believe Clemson can come out strong. I believe Clemson will have a great year, but I don’t see anything stopping Virginia Tech. I believe these two schools will fight for a BCS bid in the ACC Championship and nobody else. Now the Big East, where a few teams could pose a threat. I think Pittsburgh’s got a lot of talent, and Louisville will step up there game this year, plus there’s new comers Rutgers and South Florida, but I really believe that West Virginia will win this one, even without there coach. I mean did you see them play in the Fiesta Bowl? They demolished Oklahoma! And speaking of, I think that a balance of power is in the making in the Big 12. We’re used to seeing the Red River Shootout decide who will represent this conference, but now it seems like Kansas and Mizzou and Texas Tech can come up to challenge the traditional powers. But I still think Oklahoma will come out and could potentially contend for the title. I don’t think anyone will challenge USC in the Pac-10, I think it will take a few years for UCLA to adept to their new coach, and also watch out for Arizona St. And finally, the best conference in the nation; the SEC. In the East, I think the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party will be the deciding factor, as it’ll be a dogfight between Georgia and Florida for this division, with Tennessee and South Carolina not far behind. And in the West, I really think Auburn will come out alive and well. Without Ryan Perilouix, I don’t believe the defending champion LSU Tigers can repeat even in their own division, and I think Auburn has something to prove. I predict Georgia and Auburn to battle it out for maybe even a spot in the BSC Title Game.

I do believe an SEC team will make it to Miami on January the 8th, but it may not be who you think it is. I don’t think Georgia has what it takes to lead the pack and cary the pressure of being #1, and I think there must be a least one game in which they will slip up, so I think Auburn will get the nod there. And I think that in a weak conference (for now) that (yet again) the Ohio State Buckeyes will return to the BSC Championship Game…only to get their butts kicked by yet another SEC team and the Auburn Tigers win the National Championship! I know it’s out there, but really I just wanted to make a scenario where OSU loses to an SEC team in the title game, hahaha classic. I know I’m mean to them, but hey, I live in Ann Arbor, what can I say? So enjoy what should be a fantastic season. Oh, and one more thing: Hail To The Victors and GO BLUE!!!
