Oh how sweet it is. The Detroit Red Wings are officially the 2008 Stanley Cup Champions. Boy does that feel good to say ay? Game 6 was held at Pittsburgh’s Mellon Arena last night with another opportunity for Detroit to wrap up their 11th Stanley Cup and 4th in 11 years. Scoring first has been important all series and we struck first in the first with a great shot from Brian Rafalski on a power play. Valteri Filppula would add a contribution with his second period goal to make it 2-0, but the Penguins would answer a few minutes later with a goal from Evgeni Malkin, his first of these Finals. Zetterberg would score in third, and coincidently, Marc-Andre Fleury thought he had the puck and sat down, which made the puck trickle in behind him! But I think this makes up for Kronwall scoring on hiw own team in Game 5, so this would increase the lead to 2 goals. We could see it (again), we were so close to the Cup last game, and the clock was winding down again, and yet again, Pittsburgh struck late on a 6-4 that resulted off of a Wings penalty and an open net, and Marion Hossa was credited with that one. Oh god, we could see it happening all over again. But we held strong and brought it down to 6 seconds left, and as we tried to clear, it was kept in the neutral zone, taken into our zone, and we all thought an unbelievable tragedy was about to occur…again. They brought it in, shot on our net, Osgood saved it, but they had an excellent second chance, but it wouldn’t have counted anyways because time ran out. The game was over.
The celebrations began and it was quite a sight, although it would have been 100 times more rewarding at home for sure. Henrik Zetterberg is your Conn Smythe Trophy winner, very much well deserved. I thought it would come down to him or Osgood, but he really hurt his chances of winning it after two mediocre games to close it out. Don’t get me wrong, he was fabulous, but a save here and there wasn’t made, and Hank set a franchise record for points in the playoffs, so very much deserved there. So just a few notes form this series win: Dan Cleary becomes the first Newfoundlander to win a Stanley Cup, Nicklas Lidstrom becomes the first European born captain to guide his team to a championship, and 5 players (Nicklas Lidstrom, Tomas Holmstrom, Darren McCarty, Kirk Maltby, and Kris Draper) have been in Detroit for each of the before mentioned 4 Cups in 11 years. And about that; some may not call us a dynasty, but consider this: the San Antonio Spurs won their 4 championships in 9 years, and they wont win one this year, so that would be 10 years, and some still consider them the team of the decade (including me). So even if were not considered a dynasty, then we have no doubt been the most dominant team in recent NHL history and have definitely placed our mark in history. I also think that there’s no reason to believe that we won’t be the favorites next year as well! Nobody’s leaving, Zetterberg and Chelios are both close to reaching new deals, and everyone loves playing in Detroit. So, very excited for next year, but what a fantastic year for hockey. Ratings for this series were through the roof, and I really hope this sport can make a comeback, just because of how great it is. But before next year starts, we’re just gonna enjoy the Cup being here in Motown, and once again congrats to the 2007-2008 Stanley Cup Champs: The Detroit Red Wings.
Hey, Hey, HOCKEYTOWN!!!
