So, the UEFA Champions League Final was held today in Russia’s capital city of Moscow. Now I know not many people follow soccer, in fact I just got into the sport these past few months, but it was an extremely entertaining game, lemme tell ya. I’m a Barca guy myself (that’s Barcelona for all that may not know) and they lost to Manchester United in the semifinals, with Chelsea beating Liverpool in another classic, forcing the first all-English final in UEFA Champions League history, and keep in mind people, this sport is like life for people in Europe, it really is. It’s bigger then my Wolverines going up against those freakin Buckeyes, a lot bigger. But what a great game it was!
It started off with Man U dominating and striking first in the 26nd minute with a goal from the greatest futboller on the planet, Cristiano Ronaldo. But Chelsea would have revenge in the closing seconds of the first half, as Frank Lampard, another great one, scored in the 45th minute. This left the game tied at half. In th second, rain started to come down ever so slightly, and players were starting to get a bit chippy. Each team had chances, but nonne would go in. The rain came down harder and harder and was eventually pouring onto the field. The game would go into an extra 30 minutes and stay tied after that as well. Both Man U and Chelsea had unbelievable chances in that extra time frame though. Chelsea had one go just wide of the goal and another off the crossbar, and Manchester had one into an open net before captain John Terry headed away and out of play. Emotions ran high, and late in the extra periods, with about 5 minutes left, a bit of a skirmish broke out and a few yellow cards were assessed, but one red card was also given to Chelsea striker Didier Drogba, which meant he was kicked out for the game and couldn’t help his team out in the penalty kick rounds. So they went back and forth for two kicks apiece, scoring both times for both teams. Then the dreaded and before mentioned Cristiano Ronaldo came up as the third kicker for Man U, and what do you know, he gets blocked. So Chelsea has the upper hand into the late stages of these rounds. They would each score their next goals, bringing it down to the again before mentioned John Terry for Chelsea, and if he were to get it in the back of the net, Chelsea would win. He guesses right and Manchester keeper Edwin Van der Sar guessed wrong, leaving Terry with an open net…and he missed wide. The captain who saved the game for Chelsea in the late stages also missed an opportunity of a lifetime. So goals would go back and forth, and the 8th kicker for Chelsea would be Nicolas Anelka, and if Van der Sar could somehow guess right and block it, Manchester United would be UEFA Champions. And so be it, he did. He guessed to his right and he was right, and was rewarded with bombarding teammates and a championship in the biggest futbol game of the year. So congrats to both teams, can’t wait to follow this even carefully next year, and by that time, I’ll expect my Barcelona team to man up and have a great run.
