Ok. So sports have been pretty dead lately besides the daily stories about baseball and Brett Favre. So I decided to write this article a while ago, to kinda go along with Sportscenter’s own edition of “Titletown” (which I think Ann Arbor should’ve won, but that’s just cause I live here). So, here are the rules to this countdown:

1. Sports teams must be professional.

2. Must count ALL pro sports teams in that city (i.e. I can’t leave the Lions out of Detroit even though I would love to just because they suck).

3. If a franchise won one or multiple championships but were in a different town, I will still count it towards that franchise, not to the city they won it in. But I may choose to put that against that sports town, if the majority of their championships were in other cities.

4. I am only counting MLB, NBA, NFL, and NHL teams.

5. I am also only counting championships of current leagues (i.e. ABA and NFL championships do NOT count, only NBA and Super Bowls).

6. All cities that are considered MUST be in the United States (sorry Toronto).

To start, I listed off as many sports cities as I could, and then wrote down every team in that city. Finally I did some research and found out how many pro sports championships each of those teams had won and counted them up. Here are the cities with the most championships (which will play a factor in my final decision):

1. New York (35 Major Sports Championships)

2. Boston (32)

3. Los Angeles (20)

4. Bay Area (19)

5. Detroit (18)

6. Chicago (15)

7. Pittsburgh (12)

8. St. Louis (11)

Those are the cities who have won double digit amount of championships, but I also took into consideration some other cities, such as Philadelphia, Dallas, Atlanta, Denver, Washington D.C., Houston, Phoenix, Kansas City, Seattle, New Jersey, Nashville, Cleveland, Miami, Tampa Bay, New Orleans, Memphis, Indianapolis, Minneapolis, and Buffalo (just to show that I did my research and a lot of it).

Another big factor was a classic, 4-team town. I believe that 4 team towns, such as Boston and Detroit, are more traditional then say a 6-team town in New York and Los Angeles. One team for every major pro sports league in a city; the way it’s supposed to be. So, without further ado, let’s countdown my Top 10 Best Pro Sports Cities in the US:

10. Dallas (Mavericks, Cowboys, Stars) The city of Dallas only has 6 pro sports championships combined, 5 of which coming from Cowboy Super Bowl wins in the 70’s and 90’s and the other from the Stars in ‘99, but the fact is the Cowboys are America’s team. They have so many great figures from Emmit Smith and Troy Aikman, to nowadays where they expect Tony Romo and T.O. to lead them to a Super Bowl in the not so distant future. And don’t count out the Mavs, they’re consistently good and made it to the Finals a few seasons ago.

9. Philadelphia (Phillies, 76ers, Eagles, Flyers) The city of brotherly love also has a combined 6 championships, but they’ve been pretty split. The 76ers have 3 NBA Championships, the Flyers have 2 Stanley Cups, and the Phillies have a World Series under their belt, while the Eagles have yet to win a Super Bowl, though they did face the Patriots a few years back (but we’ll get to that city later on). One of the most classic 4-team towns in the nation, Phily deserves some love.

8. St. Louis (Cardinals, Rams, Blues) This city has been defined by baseball ever since it’s start. The Rams have one Super Bowl in ‘99, along with losing another to the Pats, and the Blues do not have a Stanley Cup. The Cardinals? Well they’ve done a bit better. More like a lot better. Their 10 World Series wins speaks for itself, with their most previous at the hands of my Detroit Tigers in 2006.

7. Bay Area (Athletics, Giants, Warriors, Raiders, Sharks) A lot of success has come out of this California area for a long time, but although their teams did well, a lot of it came from other towns. The Athletics have 9 World Series wins, 5 of which came during the time they were in Philadelphia in the early century. The Giants have 5 World Series, all 5 of which came when they were in New York. The Raiders have 3 Super Bowls and the Warriors have 2 NBA Championships, while the Sharks are yet to win a Cup, but even if they do have 19 championships combined, only 9 of them came during their time in the Bay Area. Great sports area either way.

6. Pittsburgh (Pirates, Steelers, Penguins) What a town. Pittsburgh thrives off of only 3 sports teams, but has a lot of success with all three. The Pirates have 5 World Series wins, the Steelers have 5 Super Bowls, most recently in ‘05 in Detroit, and the Penguins have 2 Stanley Cups, along with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin who led them to the Cup Finals this year only to lose to Detroit in 6. But they have more great stars in their past such as Mark Messier, and coaches such as Scotty Bowman and Herb Brooks. Pittsburgh is a fantastic city, and along with Philadelphia, make up an unbelievable sports state.

Make sure to read my next article that will countdown what I believe are the top 5 best pro sports cities in the US.
