5. Chicago (Cubs, White Sox, Bulls, Bears, Blackhawks)
This is one of my favorite cities and it’s sports teams never disappoint. The Bulls and MJ of course won their 6 championships in the 90’s, and even though the Blackhawks aren’t a notable NHL team, they still have 3 Stanley Cups. But the city has always loved baseball as well. The Cubs have 2 World Series titles and are looking to add to that this year, and the White Sox have 3 World Series, most recently in ‘05. And lets not forget da Bears and their 1985 1 loss Super Bowl season. Classic sports town no doubt.
4. Los Angeles (Dodgers, Angels, Lakers, Clippers, Ducks, Kings)
LA has a lot of great teams, but that’s just the thing, is they have 6 teams. They have a combined 20 championships through 6 teams, while a city like Detroit has 18 through 4 teams, which is why I placed them 4th on the list. The city has always relied on the Lakers and they haven’t let down; just look at their 13 championships, 2nd most out of all NBA teams. The Dodgers have 6 World Series, one of which with the help of Kirk Gibson 20 years ago. The Angels have had recent success with their 1 World Series title in ‘02 and the best record in baseball today. The Clippers and Kings haven’t struck gold yet, but the Ducks won a Stanley Cup last year in convincing fashion. The city of angels is and always will be a city of sports.
3. Detroit (Tigers, Pistons, Lions, Red Wings)
Ah, the city of Detroit. Now the city today is in worse shape then it’s ever been, but it’s sports teams are certainly not! I live about an hour away from Detroit, and I’m trying to not inflict as much bias as I can in this article, but Detroit really is great. 18 championships through 4 teams, one of the best 4 team towns in the country. The Pistons had their success in ‘89 and ‘90, along with their rout of LA in ‘04. The Tigers also have 4 World Series titles and a recent trip in ‘06, one of the greatest comeback stories in sports history. But this town has always been Hockeytown, and that’s apparent, with the Red Wings having won 11 Stanley Cups, the most out of any NHL franchise in the US (Montreal has 24 and Toronto has 13, but remember, we’re talking US cities). Along with that, I don’t see any reason why they couldn’t repeat next year! And I’m not even going to mention the Lions, it’s not necessary.
2. New York (Yankees, Mets, Knicks, Jets, Rangers, Islanders)
New York, New York. A city full of champions galore…actually, the Yankees pretty much do all the work and give NYC a good name in doing so. But I think no matter, 26 World Series championships speaks loud and clear, the most championships for any franchise in any sports, and they all came in New York, very special. There are so many fantastic Yankees as well: Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Roger Maris, Phil Rizzuto, Jackie Robinson, and Reggie Jackson just to name a few. But their other teams have done notably well too, especially their hockey teams. The Rangers have 4 Stanley Cups, as do the Islanders, but the Islanders won their back…to back…to back…to back! 4 years in a row, from 1980 to 1983, only the second franchise to do that in professional sports along with the Yankees from ‘36 to ‘39 and the Yankees have also had 5 in a row spanning from ‘49 to ‘53. The Mets and Knicks each have 2 championships, and let’s not forget the Jets with their Super Bowl III victory led by the one and only Broadway Joe Namath. New York is chock full of athletes and teams who thrived in the limelight, but I can’t put them as #1. That spot belongs to the Yankees biggest rivals.
1. Boston (Red Sox, Celtics, Patriots, Bruins)
I chose Boston as my #1 team in the land for a number of reasons. They have 32 combined championships, but with only 4 teams! New York has 35, but with 6 teams! The greatest 4-team town in the country by far. All Bostonian teams are great, and even with the Patriots recent success, they have the least amount of championships out of all other Boston teams! The Celtics have an all time NBA leading 17 championships, with the most recent coming this year and looking to repeat next year. The Red Sox, one of the most storied franchises in all of baseball, have 7 World Series, and 2 in the last 4 years. Not only the fact that they could repeat this year, but what they did in the ‘04 campaign…that was special. Probably the greatest spectacle I’ve ever seen in sports. They have notable players and no hitters and probably the greatest fans as well. Not dissing New York or Detroit, but they really do. The Bruins have 5 Stanley Cups, and then there are the Patriots with their recent domination of 3 Super Bowls and this season, where they went 18-1 with a perfect regular season and another Super Bowl berth only to be thwarted by the Giants. With so much recent success in the town (6 championships in the last 7 years combined) and their rich history and tradition, Boston is the odds on favorite for greatest sports city, and I gave it to em.
Thanks for reading and please comment with any questions, notes, or to argue for your town.
